SmoothTake Privacy Policy
This policy explains how information is handled by SmoothTake: Screen Recorder for macOS, developed by Adam Archuleta.
1. Our Privacy Approach
SmoothTake records and edits on your Mac. The app does not upload your recordings, audio, captions, cursor information, or background images to us. It does not require an account, operate a recording-storage backend, or include third-party advertising, behavioral analytics, or cross-app tracking. We do not sell or rent personal information.
This policy covers the SmoothTake app and support requests about it. Visits to buildwithadamai.com and use of its optional website concierge are covered separately by the website Privacy Policy.
2. Information Processed and Stored on Your Mac
Depending on the features you choose, local project files can contain screen or window video; system audio; microphone audio; pointer positions, clicks, scrolling, cursor appearance, and event timings; capture-source information and dimensions; imported background images or wallpaper stills; caption text and timing; and your editing settings. The app also keeps local preferences and creates temporary files for processing and export.
This information is used to record the selected content, produce editable cursor motion and zooms, generate or display captions, remember edits, and render your video. Screen and audio recordings may include personal or confidential information visible or audible in the content you capture. Check your capture source before starting and review the result before sharing it.
3. Permissions and Your Controls
- Screen recording: used to show capture previews and record the display, window, or region you select. System audio is included when you enable it.
- Microphone: used when you enable microphone recording or explicitly test a microphone. The microphone test shows levels without saving a recording.
- Input Monitoring: used during recording to capture pointer movement, clicks, and scrolling for editable cursor effects and automatic zooms. The pointer recorder does not log typed text. Text visible on screen can still appear in the screen recording.
- Selected files: used to open projects, import image backgrounds or wallpaper stills, and save exports to a location you choose. Imported background images are copied into the project.
You can stop a recording, disable optional features, or revoke permissions in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Revoking a permission may prevent the corresponding feature from working; it does not delete existing recordings.
4. On-Device Intelligence and Captions
Automatic zoom and pacing analysis run locally. When interaction results are enabled, the app analyzes visual changes in the recording on your Mac. It does not send sampled frames or screen text to an AI provider. The original screen recording itself remains part of your local project.
Automatic caption transcription uses Apple's on-device speech technology on supported Macs running macOS 26 or later. You choose the audio source and language and explicitly request any required language-model download. Apple's system manages the download, which needs an internet connection. Audio is transcribed on your Mac; SmoothTake has no cloud-transcription fallback. Manual captions do not require a speech-model download.
5. Exports, Backups, and Apple Services
SmoothTake does not automatically publish or upload your videos. Exporting saves a file where you choose. If you place a file in an iCloud Drive folder, another synced folder, or a backup service, that service may transfer or retain the file under its own settings and privacy policy. Sharing an exported video is your choice.
Apple separately handles App Store downloads, system-managed speech assets, and any operating-system or App Store diagnostics you choose to share through Apple. Those services are governed by Apple's privacy information. SmoothTake does not include a separate third-party analytics or automatic crash-reporting SDK.
6. Retention and Deletion
Local drafts remain on your Mac until you remove them. Use the recording's delete action in SmoothTake to move an app-managed draft to the macOS Trash. Files in Trash remain recoverable until removed from Trash. Deleting a draft does not delete separately exported movies, subtitle files, other copies, or backups. Remove those separately if you no longer want them, following the relevant storage or backup service's controls.
Uninstalling the app does not necessarily remove its drafts, exported files, or backups. We do not hold a server-side copy of your local recordings and cannot retrieve, restore, or remotely delete them. Back up recordings you want to keep before removing drafts.
7. Support Messages and Privacy Requests
If you email us, we receive your email address, message, and any attachments or technical details you choose to send. Our email provider processes that correspondence to deliver and store it. We use it to respond, investigate issues, and handle privacy or legal requests, not to advertise based on your recording content. Please avoid sending sensitive information or private recordings unless necessary for your request.
We retain correspondence only as needed to address the request, maintain necessary support records, or meet applicable legal obligations. You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of information you have provided to us by contacting hello@buildwithadamai.com. We may need to verify the request and may retain information where legally required. Requests about information held independently by Apple or another service should be directed to that provider.
8. Security and Children's Privacy
Your local files are subject to your Mac's account, security, storage, and backup settings. Use appropriate device protection and take care when sharing files or granting others access. No software or storage system can guarantee complete security.
SmoothTake does not solicit personal information from children or require users to submit personal information to use the app. If you believe a child has sent us personal information in a support request, contact us so we can review and address it.
9. Changes and Contact
We may update this policy when the app or its information practices change. The effective date above will be revised when an update is published. For support or privacy questions, contact Adam Archuleta at hello@buildwithadamai.com.
